In 1954, rising tension between the Netherlands and Indonesia over their conflicting interests in New Guinea led to the Dutch strengthening their claim to the colony by changing its name to Nederlands Nieuw-Guinea in the “Statute for the Kingdom of the Netherlands,” although the actual political status of Nieuw-Guinea as a colony did not change.
