The Patterns (1834) series of Pattern Coinage in the U.S. Coins contains 6 distinct entries.
History and Overview
There is but one pattern listed this year, again a private restrike, in this instance a quarter dollar. Half eagle die impressions in copper of the new Classic Head design (J-51 and J-51 a) are listed tentatively until examples are studied.
Collecting Perspective
One or two restrikes in copper exist of an 1834-dated quarter dollar struck from rusted dies, the obverse used to originally strike Browning-3 and -5, the reverse identity not known. Little is known about the copper $5 pieces. At least one well-known piece (the Byron Reed example) has been found to be a counterfeit.
