On 28 April 1954, France formally granted Vietnam full independence. The Geneva Accords, signed on 21 July 1954, established the division between Ho Chi Minh’s Democratic Republic of Vietnam (commonly called North Vietnam) and Bao Dai’s Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam). On 1 January 1955, the National Bank of Vietnam (Ngan Hang Quoc Gia Vietnam) assumed all central bank functions for the south, occupying the facilities of the Banque de l’Indo-Chine on Quay de Belgique (renamed Chong Duong) in Saigon.
