The Society for the Colonization of Free People of Color of America (COL) was founded in 1816 by Robert Finley to encourage and support the migration of free people of color to the continent of Africa. In 1822, the society established on the west coast of Africa a colony named Liberia, a name proposed by Robert Goodloe Harper, an American politician and member of the society. Liberia’s capital was named Monrovia, in honor of James Monroe, the fifth president of the United States, and a prominent supporter of the colonization of Liberia.
