Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the so-called Liberty head design was widely adopted for gold coinage starting in 1840 for the quarter-eagle ($2.50) denomination. Proof examples were struck in Philadelphia, mostly from 1856-1907. Earlier proof issues are known, but are exceedingly rare.
