The Standard Bank of British South Africa Limited, known as the Standard Bank of South Africa Limted (STD) from 1881, was incorporated on 18 October 1862 in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Initially operating within British-controlled areas, the bank gradually expanded its network to include branches across South, East, and Central Africa responding to the economic development and growth of the regions.
After the passing of the South West Africa Banks Proclamation 1930, the Barclays Bank (Dominion, Colonial and Overseas) and the Standard Bank of South Africa Limited were authorized to issue legal tender notes in the territory. Previously South African banknotes circulated in South West Africa.
