The name ‘Krugerrand’ was derived by combining Paul ‘Kruger’, with ‘rand’, the monetary unit of South Africa. The rand is also linked to the Witwatersrand, a name meaning ‘the ridge of white water’, an important gold-producing area in South Africa.
