Per the decree of 21 December 1853, the Banque du Sénégal (French: Bank of Senegal, BDS) was the first bank authorized to issue notes in French West Africa. It operated in the capital of Saint-Louis from 1855 until June 1901, at which time the right to issue notes was transferred to the Banque de l’Afrique Occidentale for a 20-year period.
