On 21 July 1975, a year after Portugal’s bloodless military coup d’état, known as the Carnation Revolution, São Tomé and Príncipe (Saint Thomas and Prince), a small Portuguese colony in the Gulf of Guinea on the West African coast, became independent. On 24 May 1976, the Banco Nacional Ultramarino (BNU) was nationalized by Decree Law Nº 16/76, and was renamed the Banco Nacional de S. Tomé e Príncipe (BNSTP).
