Obverse: At center, above a half wreath of oak and laurel, the national coat of arms with the eagle facing left, its feathers resembling plates of armor. Above, the legend ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS.

Reverse: At center of a pentagonal (five-sided) field, a large 5¢, with the date above the 5 and the mintmark M above the centavo symbol (¢). To the left and below, a partial border of stylized sun-rays from the Anillo de los Quincunces (Ring of Quincunxes) on the Aztec Calendar Stone.
