1930 Nickel MS Values

Details

The 1930 Buffalo nickel is a widely common Philadelphia-minted issue and offers ample supplies in both circulated and uncirculated grades. It boasts a respectable mintage of 22,849,000 pieces and some 2,000 extant pieces in MS65 or better; dozens are known in MS67. So, while not as readily available in the better grades as other Philadelphia mint issues after 1934, this piece is far and away more common than virtually any of the other Buffalo nickels that preceded it in the series.

Obverse: James Earle Fraser's famous and simple design depicts a Native American chief with the word LIBERTY from 1-2 o'clock. The date is placed on the lower left of the chieftain's bust.

Reverse: A full portrait of the bison, Black Diamond, with the words UNITED STATES oF AMERICA at the top periphery with the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM just underneath. The denomination FIVE CENTS is spelled out at the bottom. For the Type 1, the denomination is embossed on a flat surface.
