While common enough in circulated and low-end uncirculated grades, the 1920 Philadelphia Saint-Gaudens double eagle is an exceptionally scarce coin above the grade of MS63. While MS64s are obtainable, the quality of known specimens drops off precipitously above that, with only a few MS65s known, period. Only the finest collections have housed a 1920 Philly Saint-Gaudens $20 in the grade of MS65, and due to the rarity and high price of Gems, even ardent registry set collectors will typically find themselves having to settle for an MS63 or MS64.

Obverse Description

Liberty is portrayed standing on a rock, holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The word LIBERTY appears on the top periphery surrounded by stars. The date is stamped on the right side of the coin, just above the rock.

Reverse Description

A crescent sun appears at the bottom as if rising on the horizon with long rays extending to the top of the coin. A flying eagle covers the central portion, atop the rays. The words UNITED STATES oF AMERICA, TWENTY DOLLARS appear on the top periphery.
