1913 Buffalo, Matte Finish Nickel PR Type 1 Values

Details

The 1913 Type 1 Buffalo nickel proof is a popular acquisition among both type set builders and Buffalo nickel enthusiasts who wish to complete the proof side of the series. With relatively few proof issues made, it is quite economically feasible for the more advanced Buffalo nickel collectors to add one example of each proof to their collections. Dealers, meanwhile, encounter 1913 Type 1 Buffalo proofs on occasion. Of an original mintage of 1,520 pieces, fewer than 1,000 are known to remain in PR60 grade or higher. Most are found in the PR64 to PR66 range, with a few dozen known in PR67 and about a dozen in PR68.

Obverse: James Earle Fraser's famous and simple design depicts a Native American chief with the word LIBERTY from 1-2 o'clock. The date is placed on the lower left of the chieftain's bust.

Reverse: A full portrait of the bison, Black Diamond, with the words UNITED STATES oF AMERICA at the top periphery with the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM just underneath. The denomination FIVE CENTS is spelled out at the bottom. For the Type 1, the denomination is embossed on raised ground.
