(1849) Moffat & Co. $14.25 Gold Ingot MS Ingot, 21 3/4 Carat, K-2 Values

Details

Like the $9.25 Moffat & Company ingot, the Kagin-2 is an example of an early Moffat assay ingot and was saved from the melting pot sometime in late 1849 or early 1850 at the Philadelphia Mint. Tests in 2023 indicated that its fineness was around 2.1% lower than that stated on its face. The gold that it contained would have been valued at $13.97 in 1849, demonstrating just how inaccurate these early assay ingots could be.
