1836 Silver Gilt Pattern Gold Dollar PR J-69 Values

Details

Originals struck with coin-turn die alignment, a situation complicated by some restrikes also having the same alignment. An example plainly struck over an 1859 dated regular-issue gold dollar confirms that restrikes were made. J-69 to J-71 are restrikes made circa 1859 and later. • J-67: dies aligned coin-turn. • J-68: dies aligned medal-turn; struck for pattern purposes in January 1844.

Obverse: Liberty cap inscribed LIBERTY, surrounded by a glory of rays; motif also used in the 1836 Mint medal inaugurating steam coinage.

Reverse: Palm branch arranged in a circle enclosing 1 D. Around the border, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA / 1836.
