State of the Modern Mexican Coin Market at GreatCollections

The market for modern Mexican coins has reached a new level, and nowhere is that clearer than in the results for the 1998 Silver Onza Libertad (KM-613). In June 2026, a single example graded NGC MS-70 realized $46,125 at GreatCollections after 23 competitive bids — a price that would have been unthinkable for the issue only a few years ago.

Over the past five years, GreatCollections has seen a significant increase in bidder interest in modern Mexican coins, including the Libertad series in both silver and gold. Over the past six months, that interest has moved to another level entirely, with bidding activity from all over the world.

Much like the American Silver Eagle market of the past 10 to 15 years, backdated Libertad issues are now in strong demand as collectors work to complete their sets. There is, however, an important difference: collectors, dealers, and institutions never hoarded monster boxes of the backdated Silver Libertads the way they did with the U.S. series. The supply available to today's collectors is therefore far thinner — and when a key date appears in top grade, the competition is intense.

“The Mexican Libertad series is following the same path we watched the American Silver Eagle take over the last decade — collectors are chasing the backdated key dates to finish their sets. The difference is supply. Nobody put away monster boxes of the 1998 Onza the way they did with Silver Eagles, so when a coin like this MS-70 comes up, the bidding tells you exactly how much the market has progressed,” said Ian Russell, president of GreatCollections.

The 1998 issue is considered one of the key dates of the series, with a mintage of just 67,000. GreatCollections has offered several examples over the years, and a look at our auction archive tells the story of the market's rise across every grade level.

Prices Realized – Selected Examples

In MS-69, the grade most often offered near the top of the series:

• June 2023  —  PCGS MS-69  —  $1,114
• June 2024  —  NGC MS-69  —  $1,688
• November 2025  —  NGC MS-69  —  $3,600
• June 2026  —  NGC MS-69  —  $5,063

That is roughly a four-and-a-half-fold increase in three years for the same grade.

In MS-68:

• November 2022  —  PCGS MS-68  —  $686
• January 2026  —  PCGS MS-68  —  $2,925
• June 2026  —  PCGS MS-68  —  $3,150

A coin that brought under $700 in late 2022 now trades above $3,000.

In MS-67:

• November 2022  —  PCGS MS-67  —  $632
• May 2025  —  NGC MS-67  —  $1,098

Even the entry grades for the date have nearly doubled.

And at the very top of the population:

• June 2026  —  NGC MS-70  —  $46,125

The finest-known quality commands a price on a completely different scale — a reflection of just how few examples reach the perfect grade, and how many collectors are now chasing them.

The Gold Libertads are Following Suit

The same dynamic is now unfolding in the Gold Libertad series. Struck by the Mexican Mint (Casa de Moneda de México) since 1981 in sizes ranging from 1/20 ounce up to a full ounce, many of the backdated gold issues were produced in genuinely small numbers — the fractional pieces from the 1990s and 2000s, in particular, had very low mintages and were never set aside in quantity. As collectors move from assembling silver sets to their gold counterparts, GreatCollections has seen the same pattern of rising interest and thin supply, especially for the scarcer dates and the smaller fractionals in top grades. We expect gold to follow the trajectory silver has already traced.

The Strength is Extending to Classic Mexican Issues

We are also seeing this strength extend to classic Mexican issues. As one example, GreatCollections is featuring a complete set of Mexican 50 Pesos Gold — the celebrated “Centenario” — dated 1921 to 1947 and graded by NGC in its August 9th auctions. The set includes the rare 1931/0 overdate and the key first-year 1921 issue, the two prizes of the series. First struck to mark the centennial of Mexican independence, each 50 Pesos coin contains 1.2057 ounces of pure gold, and a complete, uniformly NGC-graded run is exactly the kind of fresh, high-quality material driving today's competition.
