1877 $50 Half Union. The unique 1877 half union with large head design struck in gold. It is ex Snowden, Haseltine, Nagy, Woodin, J-1546, now resides in the Smithsonian Institution.
Obverse Description
Liberty Head by William Barber, facing left, wearing coronet inscribed LIBERTY and with top border of coronet ornamented with beads. Hair wavy and thick, B below for Barber. Thirteen stars around border, date 1877 below.
Reverse Description
Similar in style to the contemporary double eagle but with different details: a heraldic eagle with ornaments to left and right, stars, IN GOD WE TRUST above, rays above stars. Around border, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA / FIFTY DOLLARS, and ornaments. Coronet tip between stars six and seven.
